The Unholy Masquerade is a secretive celebratory event that occurs every few years in New Zealand. The months leading up to the 2014 event was the focus for the documentary What We Do in the Shadows.
The event is hosted by the Wellington Vampire Association, in conjunction with The Lower Hutt Vampire/Witch Club and the Karori Zombie Society. The event is open to local undead creatures such as vampires, witches, demons, banshees and zombies. Guests are allowed to bring plus ones, but humans are strictly forbidden.
Party dress or costumes are encouraged, but as Viago found, dressing as nuns or vampire hunters such as Blade is discouraged due to bad taste. Events typically consist of music, dancing, socialising, humans being given as raffle prizes and a speech from the Guest of Honor.[1]
What We Do in the Shadows[]
The 2014 event was held in the Cathedral of Despair (which was actually the headquarters for Victoria Bowling Club) on June 6th, starting at 6pm. Vladislav hoped to be named as the Guest of Honor, but was horrified to learn that the guest was actually going to be his ex-girlfriend, "The Beast", formally known as Pauline Ivanovich. Vladislav briefly aged rapidly from the stress and refused to attend.
Viago and Deacon left without him, where they met Nick, who brought Stu as his plus one, and Jackie, who had just been turned into a vampire by Nick, much to Deacon's annoyance. Word quickly spread around the ball that Stu was actually human, leading Pauline and her boyfriend, Julian, to suspect that he was a vampire hunter. The guests cornered and interrogated Stu until Vladislav suddenly arrived to defend him. He and Julian fought until Stu impaled the latter with a large wooden spike. The roommates, along with Nick and Stu, made a hasty exit.[1]
