"The Sevens Ghosts" (also titled as "Sevens Ghost") is the fourth episode of the third series of Wellington Paranormal, and the seventeenth episode overall. It aired on 17 March 2021.

Synopsis[]

Minogue and O'Leary go searching for a group of ghostly rugby fans dressed as Where's Wally.[1]

Plot Summary[]

O'Leary and Minogue are called to investigate a third incident of young man being swept away by a cloud of smoke. Upon returning to the station, they find out that the victim has been found, and another man turns up at the station to report a similar event happening to him. The man recalls that a ghost dressed in a similar way to him (a red and white striped top, glasses and a beanie hat), mistook him for someone named “Wiremu” and drew an exclamation mark on his stomach.

Sergeant Maaka links the incidents to an accident that occurred in 2001 when six rugby fans dressed as where's Wally died in a car accident on their way to a Wellington Sevens game. The Paranormal Unit officers head into town and eventually manage to find and arrest two of the ghosts, who do not realise they are dead.

Back at the station, the team struggle to interrogate the ghosts, who are stuck in a permanently drunken state. Maaka informs O'Leary and Minogue that Wiremu was a friend of the ghosts who escaped death by not riding in the same car to the match. Meanwhile, the ghosts begin to wonder if they have died, and the supervising Parker confirms this, causing the ghosts to test their ability to bypass physical law and disappear.

O'Leary and Minogue head back into the city and see a crashed car embedded into the fifth floor of an office block. They enter the building and find the car empty. Minogue goes into the car and the six Wally ghosts suddenly appear in the seats before the car disappears. Maaka radio calls him and Minogue replies saying the ghosts have mistaken him for Wiremu and are taking him to the Sevens match, leaving Maaka concerned that they will take him to the afterlife.

Maaka sends O'Leary and Parker to talk to the now-middle-aged Wiremu at his home in Upper Hutt and explain the situation. O'Leary calls Minogue to confirm that they have found Wiremu, causing the car to immediately appear outside the house. Wiremu explains to the ghosts that they all died in the car crash and that he missed the pickup because he was chatting to a girl at a bar, who he later married, had kids with and divorced. He regretfully tells them that he will not accompany them to the Sevens but poses for photos with them to celebrate their reunion. The ghosts drive away to Hamilton, the new location of the Sevens, unaware that this year's tournament has been cancelled.
