"The Prisoner" is the first episode of the third season of What We Do in the Shadows. It premiered on September 2, 2021.

Synopsis[]

Guillermo's fate hangs in the balance as the vampires receive a promotion.[1]

Plot Summary[]

Following the massacre at the Nouveau Théâtre Des Vampires, Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo and Colin Robinson become afraid of Guillermo and imprison him in a cage in the basement for a month. The vampires are unable to decide what to do with him, and during these tense weeks, Guillermo secretly escapes his cage during daylight hours to eat proper food and continue carrying out his familiar duties. He sets up hidden security cameras to check for Vampiric Council assassins.

One night, Guillermo escapes the basement to apprehend a smoke-like intruder entering the house through the chimney. His appearance startles the vampires as he tries to take down the intruder, who turns out to be the Guide of the Vampiric Council. She presents a message to the household in the form of a VHS recording of Viago. Surprisingly, he says that he is impressed with the group’s ability to kill 70% of the most powerful vampires in the Tri-State area and appoints them as the leaders of the Vampiric Council of the Eastern Seaboard of the New World. All the vampires, except Laszlo, accept this offer, and the Guide offers her assistance.

In order to protect themselves in this new role, the vampires agree to have Guillermo “join the team” and promote him to become a bodyguard. They then all simultaneously hypnotize him to ensure that he will never harm them, not realizing that Guillermo has actually become immune to hypnotism.

The group are taken to the Chamber of Judgement in the Temple of Blood-Devourers and are presented with the Master’s throne, to be allocated to the supreme leader. Nandor, Nadja and Colin Robinson fight over it as Laszlo, Guillermo and the Guide look on.
