"The Escape" is the sixth episode of the third season of What We Do in the Shadows. It aired on September 30, 2021.

Synopsis[]

An ancient beast escapes and threatens the existence of all vampires everywhere.

Plot Summary[]

Nandor and Nadja discover that the Sire (real name Goëjlrm) has tunnelled out of his chamber after they had forgotten to feed him. They fear for their lives due to the theory that if a vampire dies, any vampire they created will also pass away. Nandor breaks the news to the Vampiric Council's most prestigious journalists, who are horrified at the prospect of their possible incoming deaths.

Laszlo believes the theory to be false as Nadja's creator, Baron Afanas, was killed while they survived. When Laszlo suddenly realizes that the Baron may still be undead, he, Colin Robinson and Guillermo race home. They hear the Baron calling for help from his grave and Guillermo pulls him out. The Baron, in surprisingly good spirits, reveals that he slowly regained his strength from the blood-soaked soil caused by the humans buried in the yard, but he was unable to dig his way out with only one arm.

Guillermo puts himself in charge of finding the Sire and sends Nadja and the Guide to see The Watchers, a pair of gossipy gargoyles who overlook the city. The Watchers spread the word and their friends report back that the Sire may have been spotted in Ozone Park in Queens. The whole group head to the area and follow a trail of vampire urine and destruction into a store. Laszlo and Nadja find the Sire, who has evolved into a completely beast-like form over the centuries. Laszlo tries to lure him with a harmonica melody, but he fights back and Laszlo accidentally swallows the harmonica. The vampires attempt to lure the Sire with Guillermo as bait, but Nandor changes his mind and accepts responsibility for the ordeal. Nandor tries to negotiate but the Sire rebels, and the Baron calmly reveals that he can understand his snarls. The two vampires converse in an ancient language and the Baron explains that the Sire was only aggressive because he thought the group were trying to kill him. The Sire agrees to comply but refuses to live in his cell.

An arrangement is made for the Sire, the Baron and Aspen (who really is a hellhound) to live together in a home in Nutley, New Jersey. The two vampires proceed to feed off unsuspecting Airbnb guests. The Vampiric Council hold another press conference and the journalists rejoice at the news that the Sire has been found.
