Sean Rinaldi[1] is a human who lives next to the Staten Island vampire residence. He is a recurring character in the What We Do in the Shadows TV series.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Sean is the son of Joan, a woman who grew up in the house next to the Staten Island vampires. He married a woman named Charmaine and took residence in his mother’s childhood home. While the couple’s relationship was initially a very loving one, the two frequently fell out after marrying[2] and she would regularly kick him out of the house.[3]

Sean was friendly to the vampire residents, who found him annoying but useful as a neighbour as he did favours such as taking their bins out when the vampires forgot.[4] Laszlo often hypnotized him to forget any insults towards him or any suspicious sights, such as the Staten Island Werewolf Support Group picking a fight with the vampires.[3]

What We Do in the Shadows, Season 1: 2019[]

Sean was almost killed by Baron Afanas on the street during his night out, but the vampire residents stopped him. Laszlo made him forget the incident but was immediately attacked again, it is assumed that the neighbors saved him a second time.[4]

What We Do in the Shadows, Season 2: 2020[]

In 2020, Sean invited his neighbours to his house for a Superbowl party. While watching the game with Laszlo and Nandor, he joked that they were probably vampires because he never saw them during the day, and the two failed to realize he was joking. They lured Sean away from the group by requesting a tour of the house. While looking at Sean’s collection of Ocean's 12 memorabilia, they threatened him and revealed themselves to be vampires, which Sean insisted he was only joking about. In order to keep him unsuspecting, Laszlo and Nandor both hypnotized him into forgetting they that they were vampires. This excess amount of hypnosis lead to Sean having “brain scramblies”, a condition that left him extremely confused.

Nadja reconvened with Laszlo and Nandor and the three decided that Sean could no longer function normally and should be killed to put him out of his misery. As Laszlo considered Sean to be a good friend, they decided to make his last night exciting. The vampires flew him away from the house and demonstrated their superpowers to him, but this only made him more terrified and confused. The group returned to his home and Sean saw Charmaine and didn’t recognize her, but declared her to be “the most beautiful creature” he had ever seen. He gifted Charmaine with Nadja's necklace that he had found, and the two made up. Nadja decided she would wait for the couple to die to get the necklace back, and the vampires let Sean live so he can be devoted to his wife.[2]

What We Do in the Shadows, Season 3: 2021[]

In 2021, Sean recovered from his “brain scramblies” but his relationship with Charmaine remained positive. The couple decided to renew their wedding vows at the Monaco Grand Hotel and Casino. They invited their vampire neighbors, who experienced a severe power drain when the soils of their homelands were vacuumed up by room service. In order to pay for plane tickets for Guillermo to gain new soil, Laszlo asked Sean if he could borrow his emergency credit card. Despite Laszlo's lack of hypnosis ability, Sean agreed to this. Sean renewed his vows with the vampires so exhausted the other guests assumed they were drunk. Sean later confessed to Laszo that he had a gambling problem, had already blown all his money on the trip and feared Charmaine was going to leave him.

When Guillermo finally returned with new soil, the vampires carried out a scheme where they used hypnosis to fix a boxing match and win a cash prize large enough to repay the money Laszlo borrowed from Sean.[5]

Sean soon found himself in money trouble again when he invested in enough “Guy Pillows” to fill his whole garage as part of a pyramid scheme and only managed to sell three. As a last resort on the night before his court case, he invited his friends to a “boys only night” and tried to convince his friends to buy the pillows. When everyone refused to buy them, Sean stormed out and explained his situation to Laszlo. As a former barrister of the Queen's Bench, Laszlo offered to defend Sean in court. Due to having not been in a human court for over 300 years, Laszlo failed to act appropriately and Colin was no help as a de facto paralegal. Sean was ordered to pay $12,700. Laszlo and Sean drowned their sorrows in a bar and returned to the vampire residence.

In a bid to save his vampire friend Derek from execution by the Vampiric Council, Guillermo brought Laszlo to the Temple of Blood-Devourers to act as his defence. It was eventually agreed that Derek would be freed, with Laszlo volunteering to mentor Derek and work off his transgressions. Under Laszlo's mentorship, Derek became a door-to-door salesman and used hypnosis on his customers in order to sell off Sean's Guy Pillows.[1]
