Nadja's ghost, sometimes referred to as Dolly, Doll Nadja, or Doll With The Spirit of Deceased Human Nadja Inhabiting It is a ghost of Nadja's dead human form. She appears in What We Do in the Shadows (TV series).

Biography[]

When the then-human Nadja transformed into a vampire several hundred years ago, her physical body died before becoming undead, causing her spirit to leave, but it remained on Earth as a ghost rather than move on to the afterlife.

In 2020, Nadja's household became infested with ghosts, including that of Nadja's former lover Jeff Suckler. The vampires held a séance and brought back the ghosts of their human selves. Each vampire decided to spend time with their corresponding ghost to help them complete their unfinished business so they could leave.

Nadja's ghost was furious when she realized Nadja had not made any major achievements despite having lived for several centuries. It became apparent that her unfinished business was to see Nadja achieve something. The two however become friends over their similarities and Nadja decided she wanted her ghost to secretly stay for a while as she made more enjoyable company than her male roommates. In the attic, Nadja found a doll and encouraged her ghost to disguise herself by possessing it. Jeff's ghost came in and Nadja demanded he leave, although her ghost took a liking to him.[3]

Nadja's ghost possesses a doll.

The doll remained in the house as a companion for Nadja, but the residents eventually figured out who she was. When Laszlo fled to Pennsylvania to avoid having to fight or pay Jim, a vampire who he was in debt to, the ghost consoled Nadja. Colin Robinson also tried to flirt with the doll, but she rejected his advances.[4]

After dealing with a coven of witches, Nadja was horrified to return to the house and find that the witches’ familiar, Black Peter, had trashed her house and misplaced the doll, but it turned out to be fine.[5]

Nadja's ghost would later inadvertently help save the vampires' lives when she informed Guillermo that they were away to see the Théâtre des Vampires. Guillermo realized the theatre performance was a trap set by the Vampiric Council and rescued them.[6]

About a month after the theatre incident, Nadja was invited to become leader of the Vampiric Council of the Eastern Seaboard of the New World.[7] The new job kept Nadja so occupied that she had no time to spend with her ghost. Feeling neglected, the ghost ran away, still in her doll form. No-one initially noticed, but Nadja was distraught upon realizing and knows she had ran away to cause drama.

Nadja, Nandor and Guillermo found her in a toy store, where she hid on the shelf and attacked Nandor. She then left the doll to possess a mannequin and ran away from the store, demanding to be left alone. The ghost then possessed an angel statue, still refusing to comply, and then possessed a giant inflatable rat to run away. Nandor and Nadja chased the ghost into an alleyway and Nandor punctured the rat host. As she slowly deflated, she begged Nadja to let her go, but Nadja admitted her new job had made her extremely busy and apologized for ignoring her. The ghost returned to the doll and back to the house.[8]

The ghost would later be seen with Nadja avoiding Nandor while he is depressed and appear in the memorial portrait to commemorate Colin Robinson’s passing. During the painting process, it was revealed that Nadja had been invited to move to London to join their Vampiric Council. Nadja and the ghost had themselves shipped to London in the same coffin together.[9]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The doll the ghost possesses is an animatronic puppet designed and operated by Paul Jones. All its movements were done animatronically, except the mouth, which was CGI and animated by Bob Munroe. Costume designer Amanda Neale made the doll's outfits and hairstylist Tamara Harrod styled the doll's hair, both often done to match human Nadja's appearance at the time.[10]
