Maero are extremely rare humanoid beings of Māori folklore.
Characteristics[]
Maero live in the forests of New Zealand. They are very tall, covered in a thick layer of hair and have long, sharp claws. They have human-level intelligence and are capable of speech, but may consume humans if hungry.
Maero share many traits with similar creatures of other countries' folklore. This includes the bigfoot or sasquatch of the USA, the yeti of Tibet, the yowie of Australia, the yeren of China and the woodwose of England.
History[]
In 2021, a female Maero travelled all the way to Remutaka Forest to look for more of her own kind, preferably male. She found a vlogger and ate him; his disappearance prompted an investigation from the Wellington Police Paranormal Unit. She was found after abducting their assisting Constable Parker when she mistook him for a male Maero because he was wearing a ghillie suit. The Unit tried to arrest her for eating the camper but she managed to run away from them.[1]
When Parker later encountered a shapeshifter who transformed into his worst fears, it briefly turned into a Maero.[2]
