Laszlo’s witch skin hat is one of his most prized possessions, despite being cursed. The hat is made entirely out of witch skin and appeared to still be alive and occasionally bleeding.
History[]
Laszlo received the hat while draining the blood of a Bavarian witch hunter, who demanded Laszlo take it from him. Laszlo failed to realize his warning that the hat was cursed. Laszlo later wore the hat on the ship to New York, making fellow vampire crewmate Simon the Devious jealous.
The hat, according to Nadja, caused several horrible incidents including the Great Potato Famine, and a horse attacking Laszlo before trying to mate with him. Nadja resented the hat and tried to throw it away several times, but it kept literally crawling back. Laszlo still refused to believe it was cursed.
When the couple plotted to meet with Simon again to join forces and take over New York, Laszlo decided to wear the hat to show off. As he and Nadja argued over the hat, it caused their new familiar Justin to become crushed by a bookshelf and Laszlo to fall through the floorboards. Later that night, it caused them to get stuck in traffic in a taxi that smelled bad. Laszlo then got his cape stuck in the taxi door and was dragged down the road.
Simon only agreed to join forces if Laszlo gave him the hat. Laszlo refused, until Simon's gang, the Leather Skins, intimidated him into handing it over. He agreed, and Simon went back on his deal and threw Laszlo and his flatmates out of The Sassy Cat Club. As they left, Simon accidentally blew up the club with a flaming arrow, forcing Laszlo to finally admit that the hat was cursed.
While at the hospital that night to visit an injured Guillermo, Laszlo discovered a heavily bandaged and unconscious Simon. He stole back the cursed hat, only to cause Guillermo to flatline every time he put it on.[1]
At some point, Laszlo took the hat to a necromancer to try and get the curse removed. The necromancer tried pouring a special powder on the hat, which only caused it to scream and writhe in pain, an occurrence that hadn’t happened before.[2]
Following the nightclub incident, a seemingly poorly Simon began to lurk in the sewers of Staten Island, plotting to get the hat back. He persuaded Nadja and Nandor to let him stay at their home, and once he recovered he demanded the hat. Laszlo retrieved it and he and Simon fought over it, with both parties repeatedly stealing the hat back and getting injured due to the hat’s curse. The fight moved outside and Simon led Laszlo into the sewers in bat form. Laszlo's roommates followed them and became outnumbered by the Leather Skins, with Simon wearing the hat. Nadja demanded to know why he wanted the hat so badly, Simon asserted that he was envious of Laszlo and Nadja's relationship and could not gain satisfaction from anyone, including his own gang. Simon then realised his foot had become stuck on the sewer grating he was standing on, which started to break, leaving him to slowly sink into the water below. The Leather Skins, offended by his lack of caring, refused to help him. Laszlo asked Guillermo to wait for Simon to drown and then retrieve the hat.[3]
When Laszlo agreed to accompany Nadja to London for a promotion within the Vampiric Council, he tried to sneak the hat with them, but Nadja stopped him.[4]
