Joan is a human neighbor who lives next to the Vampire Residence. She appears in the What We Do in the Shadows TV series.
Biography[]
As a child, Joan lived next door to the Staten Island vampires and Nadja would occasionally babysit her. Nadja taught her how to dance and would use her vampire abilities to turn herself into a cat and allow Joan to sit on the ceiling, which most likely frightened her, but as an adult she remembered Nadja fondly overall.
When Joan grew up, she married a man named Franklin and had a son named Sean Rinaldi. Sean married a woman named Charmaine and lived in Joan’s childhood home. By 2020, an elderly Joan began to suffer from dementia and was living with Sean in the house.
For the 2020 Superbowl, Sean invited the vampires next door to his house for a party. As Nadja socialized with the female guests Joan came in and said she recognized Nadja and recalled unusual memories of her. Nadja denied this and the guests assumed Joan was confused and led her to her room. Nadja met Joan in her room to catch up and the two were delighted to be reunited, but when Nadja saw a photograph of Joan wearing the jade necklace she inherited from her mother, she turned violent and demanded it back. Joan called for help from the wives, thinking she was having an episode, and Nadja proceeded to ransack the house to look for the necklace.
The necklace was found by Sean while he was suffering from ‘brain scramblies’ due to being over-hypnotized by Nandor and Laszlo. He gave the necklace to Charmaine and Nadja decided to let it go and wait for the couple to naturally die to get it back.
At some point, Nadja explained to Joan that the reason for her youthful appearance was because she had eternal life. She refused to grant this to Joan as she would remain looking elderly, a fact that Joan took strangely well.[1]
