"Colin's Promotion" is the fifth episode of the second season of What We Do in the Shadows. It aired on May 6th, 2020.
Synopsis[]
Colin Robinson gets promoted at work and his new power threatens the balance of power in the vampire house.[1]
Plot Summary[]
Colin Robinson gets promoted to a management position at his workplace, which initially upsets him as it would mean less time at home to feed off his immortal roommates. However, he quickly thrives within the role as he has more influence over his colleagues who now have no choice but to listen to him. Colin’s powers begin to grow as he feeds from more energy in the office.
One night, Colin walks in on his roommates as they discuss rearranging the artwork in the house. Colin points out a painting of a burning village that Nadja has never noticed before. She realises that the village is her own one, which was burned to the ground around 200 years before she was born, and that Nandor is pictured in the corner as the perpetrator. She flies into a rage and tries to kill him, while Colin feasts on their energy in his basement.
Colin’s powers increase at an alarming rate. His hair suddenly grows back, he gains the ability of flight and can now drain the life-force of colleagues and plants by merely addressing them. At home, Nadja continues to rage at Nandor and Guillermo realises that Colin is using his powers to agitate them. Colin’s roommates argue with each other and he drains them until they become too weak to continue. Nadja attempts to distract him so her roommates can flee the house, but they are all too weak, and the vampires become so drained that they suddenly age rapidly.
The vampires beg for mercy, but Colin rejects it, claiming that they never treated him as a friend as they never listened to him or cared about his promotion. Guillermo tries to run away but Colin blocks his path by multiplying himself twice. The original Colin declares his copies to be his new friends, but the three become embedded in a dull discussion over their own nicknames for sixty-three minutes until they all bore themselves to death.
Colin’s roommates recover and drag the Colins’ bodies into the yard for a burial. They all recall genuinely fond memories of him and express great appreciation for him. As they start to fill the grave with earth, the original Colin suddenly awakens, admitting that he pretended to dead in order to hear his eulogy. His clones remain dead and Guillermo buries them.
Colin’s company goes bust as his rampant energy draining destroys all productivity in the office. Colin, now back to his normal level of power, wanders into a new similar office and introduces himself as a new employee, feasting on the workers in the process. Meanwhile, Laszlo resolves the conflict at home by editing the painting of the village, replacing himself for Nandor, adding a topless Nadja and depicting Nandor trapped inside one of the burning buildings.
