"A Farewell" is the ninth episode of the third season of What We Do in the Shadows. It aired on October 21, 2021.

Synopsis[]

Colin has a birthday and a vampire says goodbye.

Plot Summary[]

Nandor resists all his roommates' attempts to help him embrace his vampirism and becomes so unhappy that he decides he will take a “super slumber”, the process of falling asleep for an uncertain extended period of time. The vampires are horrified by the prospect and Colin Robinson is upset that Nandor will be missing his 100th birthday that night. Nandor goes to sleep in his coffin and Guillermo boards up his room.

Immediately afterwards, the Council guide arrives and tasks the household with hosting an event for the Supreme Worldwide Vampiric Council, who are coming to check on their progress that night. Nadja is too embarrassed to tell the guide that Nandor is slumbering and says they will go ahead with the event. The guide leaves and Guillermo wakes up Nandor to break the news, but he refuses to take part and tells Nadja to inform the Council that she killed him.

The Vampiric Council guests arrive, along with several local vampires Laszlo invited round to celebrate Colin’s birthday. When Council member Contessa Carmilla De Mornay asks Nadja where Nandor is, she hesitantly claims that she killed him as he was a threat to her power. The guests are impressed by this and request to see his corpse. Guillermo wakes Nandor up again and asks him to play dead. Contessa, along with Dominykas the Dreadful and Donal Logue, enter to pay their respects and further annoy Nandor by deciding to see if his “member” was as legendary in size as it was said to be.

As Nadja gives a toast to all the guests, Laszlo takes over to give a passionate speech to honor Colin. Nadja sends him and the guests to library for an orgy and berates Laszlo for bringing up his birthday so many times; Laszlo calmly explains to Nadja and Guillermo that Colin is dying. Laszlo reveals that several months ago, he found a book in the Council library which revealed that energy vampires expire when they turn one hundred years old. Laszlo immediately removed the page from the book and didn't have the heart to tell Colin, instead deciding to make sure his last few months were as enjoyable as possible. Colin arrives to say he will skip the show as he has a stomach-ache, and roommates realise his death is soon to come.

As Colin lies in his bed, Guillermo, Nadja and Laszlo discuss their friendship. Guillermo fetches Nandor for a third time, but when they arrive, the other vampires sadly confirm that Colin has passed. Nandor refuses to believe this and accidentally smashes Colin's face in while trying to wake him up.
